In 2022, we conducted a feasibility study for BioM, the Bavarian Biotech Cluster Organization, evaluating the potential for a pre-seed and early-stage incubator at the IZB in Planegg-Martinsried.
Our findings helped secure state support for MAxL, BioM’s new co-creation incubator driving innovation in medicine and life sciences — now becoming a reality.

SLA provides an end-to-end service for projects, starting with understanding the workflow of our clients to handing over an operational facility.
Drawing on our background in molecular biology and biotech startup operations, we developed a feasibility study and preliminary layout for the MAxL incubator. By aligning the design with IZB’s infrastructure and the needs of early-stage teams, we ensured the proposed lab and office concept would fully support future biotech startups.

Creating this ecosystem for the MAxL feasibility study involved carving out spaces for social interaction – Standup and welcome area, Tea kitchen, Team rooms, open workspaces.
We reconfigured the existing room layouts for this and repurposed existing equipment, in order to create an inspiring and interactive space.

The MAxL incubator was conceptualized with connectivity to various spaces in mind, making use of the existing IZB infrastructure and flexible usage to promote collaboration and effective space utilization.

To arrive at the most effective space utilization, we produced and iterated over 100 layout variations, optimizing material flow, open workspace design, and collaboration points. We integrated flexible wall systems, reused over 100 inventoried furniture pieces, and developed detailed technical, safety, and utility plans.

As for any of our clients, we prepared a 360° virtual tour to optimize our planning process.
This tour also helped BioM to drive forward their planning and efficiently communicate with stakeholders and contractors.

We examined the proposed IZB space to accommodate multiple teams. As MAxL is intended as a space for early-stage startups, we proposed an initial room layout that encourages collaboration.
